How VoiceOver and TalkBack Work

Both screen readers sit between your app's UI and the user. When someone taps, swipes, or activates an element, the screen reader intercepts the gesture and translates it into an action within the accessibility tree.

VoiceOver (iOS)

Flutter

Flutter builds its own rendering pipeline and generates a separate semantics tree:

  • Semantics widget — Wraps child widgets with accessibility properties: label, hint, button, header
  • MergeSemantics — Groups child semantics into a single node, useful for cards or list items

Screen reader testing belongs alongside functional QA, not as an afterthought.
